Description

The Royal Collection contains one of the finest groups of eighteenth-century Sèvres porcelain in the world. It's importance has long been recognised, but it is only with the publication of Sir Geoffrey de Bellaigue's monumental three-volume catalogue raisonné that it's richness, variety and range can be fully appreciated.

The three volumes cover all the French porcelain in the Collection made at Sèvres and in the Paris factories before 1830, although the chief emphasis is on the King's aquisition of outstanding pieces of eighteenth-century Sèvres porcelain.

Sir Geoffrey de Bellaigue was Director of the Royal Collection and Surveyor of The Queen's Works of Art until 1996. A former Trustee of the Wallace Collection and Honorary President of the French Porcelain Society from 1985 to 1999, he is regarded as one the world's leading authorities on Sèvres porcelain and has published extensively on the decorative arts in the Royal Collection.

Praise For…

“No other Sèvres catalogue could match this one, not just because the size and scope of the Royal Collection has been unbeaten for 180 years, nor because the sheer beauty of the publication is unsurpassed, but because it brings together the expertise of a lifetime. At a moment when some see the eighteenth century as an endangered area of study (and this is never more true than of the decorative arts of the period), and when object-based research needs to fight for its place among all the other activities in museums today, it is wonderful to see the Royal Collection investing in and valuing scholarship at this high level.”

— Rosalind Savill

“A sumptuous catalogue which is a pleasure to read and a mine of all sorts of information.”

— Aileen Dawson

“A monumental three-volume work that scholars, collectors, and amateurs of Vincennes/Sèvres porcelain have been anticipating eagerly for such a long time and the likes of which will probably never be seen again. . . . The superbly detailed photographs replicate the experience that only a very few curators or collectors are privileged to experience.”

— Selma Schwartz
